Style Basics: Fashion Morphology / Básicos de Estilo: Morfología de la Moda

Hi Beauties:

I made the decision to do a series of posts that help us with the principles of style. The basics to better explain. And what better time to start than in this holiday season. And to start I bring the morphology of the body and how this helps us when dressing. And Morphology is nothing more than the study of the body and in fashion is body types. Personal style is an extension of our expression but if we don't know our language we can't express ourselves well, we will not get our message out.

By knowing your body type you will know what suits you and what doesn't. Now,I will not go into each body type, I will only limit myself to the descriptions. I will also only talk about the feminine silhouette, I will not  the masculine ones, I will not mention the variants within each type of body (which exist) because I will only limit myself to the basic figures.

Rectangular or Straight:
It"s characterized by having the same measurements on the shoulders, waist and hips. Hence its name. It's a type of body that usually looks athletic and that is quite popular since the catwalk models tend to have it.

Inverted Triangle:
It's characterized by having the measurement of the shoulders wider than the measurement of the waist and hips. Most body volume is up while hips and legs tend to be delicate and thin.

Hourglass:
It's characterized by having the same or similar shoulder and hip measurements and a smallest waist. It is a proportionate and balanced body type and is considered as the most feminine figure.

Pear or Triangle:
It's characterized by having smallest shoulders and waist and  widest measurement of the hips. This area is larger than the rest of the body and is another femenine figure.

Apple:
It is characterized by having similar shoulder and hip measurements but in turn the chest and waist measurements are also similar. Even so, the hips tend to be narrower than the chest.

Now, I recommend that you look for a tape measure and measure your shoulders, waist and hips and let yourself be carried away by this generic guide to know what is  your body type. Remember, don't get carried away by the stereotypes people say. There could be an Plus size woman with an hourglass figure and a Petite size woman with an apple figure. It's not weight or height. Body type is just a frame.

I hope this helps you. Soon, I will come with more details for each body type. Let me know in the comments what type of body you are or if you know of another body type that is not mentioned here.

Hola Bellezas:

    1. I know but that's like a map. I mean if you know your shape you know how to express your self with fashion. You know what look sexy, cute, empowering on you. There's actually 12 body shapes. That's why I say that I'm just talking about the basics ones.

  8. I'm still not sure of my shape. I'm either an apple or a pear. Either way, I could stand to lose a few pounds.

Wow.. Great guide..! I've never had look into this, it was so nice knowing about different body types. I think mine is a ''pear'' body type. I got small chest and waist yet my hips are wide.
